It's HAZE here. I'm usually not one to spend a lot of time dwelling on the past. That said, the past two years has seen me spending an inordinate amount of time sifting through the mountains of crap that have piled up from various phases of these 60 years of life. Emptying a couple storage spaces, basements, offices and garages will have you seeing long lost and forgotten artifacts. This right here is the OX-OP years!
After shutting down AmRep in ’99 and opening Grumpy’s in downtown Minneapolis, we started hosting friends art shows in the large side room of the bar nicknamed “The City Club”. Those folks included Frank Kozik, Shepard Fairey, SHAG, Billy Childish, COOP and others. These shows were such a hit that me and my brother-in-law rolled up our sleeves and built a large gallery space in what was an old large cinderblock garage behind Grumpy’s. The art shows then moved into the freshly dubbed OX-OP gallery & for 3 years, we had a new show every month. They were were an instant hit & the openings were EPIC, bringing artists from around the country and world to Minneapolis. With years of shows, the list is too long to mention everyone here, but included Niagara, Camille Rose Garcia, Gary Baseman, Dalek, Yumiko Kayukawa, Gary Taxali, Jaime Hayon & Mark Mothersbaugh.
While sorting the piles o’ stuff, I came across a few bankers boxes stuffed with postcards from these various art shows (1999-2007). It was an intense period with hanging and promoting a new art show every month & was a herculean effort to say the least. Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of stories from younger creatives as to how important OX-OP was to them, so I decided to put together a box set of these for the folks that were there and recall the gallery fondly.
Edition of 100 boxes, each contains up to 40 vintage postcards. Cards come in a black clamshell box has an OX-OP sticker on the top & a hand-stamped one on the bottom. Most cards are in pristine condition, but after 2 decades of being hauled around from space to space, there's a chance certain cards might have a rounded corner or slight bowing from a rubber band. Dimensions are 6.5"x 4.25" x 1.25".
